How to use this website

Phonics is a method of teaching children to read the English Language by recognising the sounds that letters, or combinations of letters, make and blending these sounds together to form words.

When children have learnt the sounds they can then use what they know to work out what words say by reading each sound and blending them together.
Phonics is taught in a systematic way, with the easiest sounds first followed by more complex sounds.

This website and the accompanying resources show the order in which sounds should be taught, how to write the sounds and how to blend them together to form words and then sentences.

The teaching programme is built around three sets of sound cards.

The first sets of sounds the children will learn are on the green sound cards, followed by orange sounds cards and then blue. The blue cards are more complex sounds and will only be learnt by the children once they have learnt all the sounds on the first two sets of cards.

It may take the children a few days or even a few weeks to learn each set of sounds. Some children may take much longer.

For each of the sets on the green and orange sound cards, a video can be found on this website which demon states how the letters are formed, what they sound like and how they can be blended to form words.

As each set of sounds has been learnt, there are more and more words the children will be able to decode. The accompanying words and sentence book gives examples of words and sentences that the children will be able to read after learning each set of sounds.

There will be many more examples than this and as the children learn more sounds they will be able to practice by reading the books in the accompanying resource pack.
